Who We Are

Maya Tequileria has become a new local pick, tucked away in quaint quarters amongst some of Short Pump’s most exciting locations and offerings. This markedly different eatery brings Modern Mexican Cuisine inspired by head Chef Maria, and Michael Oseguera’s culinary influences. Michael’s family roots are in Amecameca de Juarez, a small town located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Mexico.  In the early 90’s Maria moved to the United States, and brought with her a culmination of Latin cuisine knowledge. Maria’s influences were inspired by cooking hand in hand with Michaels Aunt.  2012 Maria and her family not only transplanted themselves, but their love of Mexican culture and food as well to Virginia. Our goal is to bring imaginative plates that impress our senses with rousing flavors and beautiful presentation to Richmond’s food scene, and impart a feeling of warmth and comfort for our guests.

The Food

Maya features a Modern Mexican Cuisine with a refined Latin-Asian presentation. Modern Mexican is an exciting blend of vibrant flavors to turn dinners into celebrated memories. Our bold flavors take you on a tour from Mexico to South America. We are committed to using fresh ingredients from local markets. Once seated, the pleasant atmosphere and neighborly service will allow you to feel whisked away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and ready to relax and converse over a wide selection of tapas-style choices. Our entrees also symbolize our rich history as pioneers of taste, and truly reflect the authenticity of the culture we represent. Some of the market driven plates like our tender marinated skirt steak, served with fried plantains, and built upon a bed of rice, garlic-enriched black beans, fresh guacamole, and a juicy slice of grilled pineapple is sure to grab your attention. Similarly, dessert at Maya is just as elegant, and executed in a format that spotlights Maria’s auteur knowledge.

Tequila Culture

Maestros Tequileros (masters of tequila) implies that we understand tequila, but more importantly—serve it well. We have made it our inspiration for every guest to experience our culture of tequila. There are no mixes or fake ingredients that impede the full effect of an exceptional tequila drink. Therefore, we carefully craft and perfect each and every drink on the menu. Our notable bartender, Robbie Aldred, creates a memorable masterpiece every time. From the vivid presentation to the fresh distinctive flavor, you’ll experience sensory overload in the best possible way. Although tequila is our culture, we do offer a full bar with many options including local wines such as Barboursville Vineyard, who won the 2013 Governor’s Cup (and 4th overall.) We pride ourselves on the artistic creativity of our drinks, and pair them unequivocally well with the menu. Combine these two characteristics, and you’re left with a destination spot that provides casual elegance and a modern flair to a truly one of a kind Mexican restaurant.
